Civil Rights Reflection

I think the most interesting thing I realized yesterday was how recent many of these events are. When we talk about segregation I think sometimes I tend to think of it as so far in the past but in terms of history, it was relatively recent. I thought it was really interesting to learn about the freedom riders because it gave insight into how corrup the state governemnt was which I dont think I realized.

I really liked how the legacy museum was set up and how they made it interactive, it was really interesting at the phone call station to hear the inmate's stories. I found it interesting that at the entrance of the museum it said on the wall something along the lines of "you are standing in the spot where slaves were once sold" and I found it almost haunting and it changed my feeling towards the space as a whole.

2.7 Mid-Semester 2 Blog Post

2.7 Mid-Semester 2 Blog Post

1) I think the most important thing I learned about immigration is the way it has evolved to fit societies standards. For example, when American's were against Chinese people, the Chinese Exclusion Act was created and it prohibited Chinese people from being able to immigrate to the United States. The laws of immigration evolved to fit the beliefs of American's at the time.

2) The most important thing I learned about immigration today is that there is more than one way to look at it. For example, people who look at it from a humanitarian aspect may not be as supportive of enforcing laws that target illegal immigration because they are considering the fact that many people illegally enter the country in hopes of finding a better life, not with bad intentions. People who look at it from a logistical standpoint may be more supportive of these laws because they are acknowledging that people who do this are committing an illegal crime, and potentially taking jobs away from legal citizens. I think I have learned that it is important to look at this topic through both standpoints because the topic is not black and white.

3) I think poor living conditions and the ability to find a job, as the technology was advancing and industrialization was occurring, were two challenging aspects of living in the 19th century. I think American's were successful in handling these challenges because they began creating movements that dealt with cleaning up cities to make them more liveable, and we grew accustomed to technology being more of a part of our daily life.

4) The effort to build the Highline is related to progressivism because it took something that was deemed a "problem", and not only fixed it, but also made it into something beneficial to the community. The Highline is dissimilar to the progressive movement because it was funded by big businesses and progressivists didn't support big businesses.

Philanthropy Research

Philanthropy Research

The definition of philanthropy according to Marriam Webster is "goodwill to fellow members of the human race especially: active effort to promote human welfare."

According to medium, the difference between charity and philanthropy is that charity tends to be more emotional based, whereas philanthropy is more strategic planning of solutions to a problem.

Andrew Carnegie invested so much in philanthropy because he believed in the "gospel of wealth" meaning that he believed that people who had the ability to do so were morally obligated to help others. He spent the money in the way he did so that he wasn't just handing out money, but instead giving people resources to better their lives. For example, instead of raising the pay of his workers, he built them a library.

They both gave away hundreds of millions of dollars, however, they focused on helping different aspects of society.  new york times

The Carnegie Foundation is involved with international affairs, The Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, The Carnegie Endowment for National Peace, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, The Carnegie Institution for science, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburg, The Carnegie Museums of Pittsburg, The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, The Carnegie UK Trust, The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission,

Current philanthropists: Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Mark Zuckerberg, J.K. Rowling, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Warren Buffet. Oprah Winfrey is one of the worlds top philanthropists, and she started an organization called Oprah's Angel Network. Their mission is to help solve problems people are facing around the world. She has also supported many other causes like arts and education, humanitarian aid, and environmental aid.

If I were a philanthropist I would want to focus on helping developing countries. I know many places are lacking in safe drinking water, and liveable conditions. But on top of just giving away money to help solve these issues, I'd also like to help create a hands-on experience for people who would like to help because I feel like that is just as important.
